Movie Review: Knives Out (2019)

“Knives Out” is a 2019 mystery-comedy film written and directed by Rian Johnson. The film features an all-star cast, including Daniel Craig, Chris Evans, Ana de Armas, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Michael Shannon, among others. It tells the story of the wealthy Thrombey family, who are gathered together for the 85th birthday of their patriarch, Harlan Thrombey (Christopher Plummer). But when Harlan is found dead the next morning, the police suspect foul play, and the family’s secrets and motivations are all brought to light.

The film begins with an intriguing setup, as Harlan Thrombey is found dead in his study, apparently having slit his own throat. However, the circumstances surrounding his death seem suspicious, and it’s not long before Detective Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) is called in to investigate. As he begins to question the members of the Thrombey family, we start to see the complex web of relationships and hidden motives that lie beneath the surface.

One of the great strengths of “Knives Out” is its outstanding cast. Daniel Craig is a standout as Detective Blanc, delivering a hilarious and over-the-top performance that is both memorable and entertaining. Chris Evans is also excellent as the rebellious and entitled grandson of Harlan Thrombey, while Ana de Armas shines as the innocent nurse who becomes caught up in the family’s drama.

The film is also visually stunning, with beautifully designed sets and costumes that perfectly capture the opulent world of the Thrombey family. The attention to detail in every aspect of the production is impressive, and it all adds up to create a truly immersive experience.

But what really sets “Knives Out” apart is its clever and unpredictable plot. Just when you think you’ve figured out what’s going on, the film throws another twist or turn your way. The story is expertly crafted, with a carefully balanced mix of humor, suspense, and drama that keeps you engaged from beginning to end. It’s a film that rewards close attention and multiple viewings, as there are numerous subtle clues and details that you might miss the first time around.

At its core, “Knives Out” is a clever and engaging mystery that keeps you guessing until the very end. But it’s also a biting commentary on wealth, privilege, and family dysfunction. The Thrombey family is a group of entitled and self-absorbed individuals who are more concerned with maintaining their wealth and status than with any sense of morality or decency. They are willing to lie, cheat, and even kill in order to get what they want, and the film does an excellent job of exposing their hypocrisy and greed.

“Knives Out” is a fantastic film that is both entertaining and thought-provoking. It’s a rare gem of a movie that manages to be both a thrilling mystery and a biting satire at the same time. With its outstanding cast, stunning visuals, and clever plot, it’s a film that is sure to delight audiences for years to come. You can buy a copy of the movie here.
