Hello readers!

My birthday was earlier this month and I got several books and book related items that I thought you might like to see so you can add them to your holiday or birthday wish list. You’ll be seeing reviews for mostly everything over autumn.

The Books

Goodreads:

The Marlow Murder Club is on the hunt for a killer… Geoffrey Lushington, Mayor of Marlow, dies suddenly during a town council meeting. When traces of aconite―also known as the queen of poisons―are found in his coffee cup, the police realize he was murdered. But who did it? And why?

The police bring Judith, Suzie, and Becks in to investigate the murder as civilian advisors right from the start, so they have free rein to interview suspects and follow the evidence to their heart’s content… which is perfect because Judith has no time for rules and standard procedure. But this case has the Marlow Murder Club stumped. Who would want to kill the affable mayor of Marlow? How did they even get the poison into his coffee? And is anyone else in danger? The Marlow Murder Club is about to face their most difficult case yet…

My Thoughts:

The Queen of Poisons is the third installment in The Marlow Murder Club series. I’ve reviewed the first two books The Marlow Murder Club and Death Comes to Marlow and have really enjoyed the cozy mysteries and the found family that has been established between the three women who have come together to solve crimes around Marlow.

Goodreads:

Shocking news reaches the Thursday Murder Club.

An old friend in the antiques business has been killed, and a dangerous package he was protecting has gone missing.

As the gang springs into action they encounter art forgers, online fraudsters and drug dealers, as well as heartache close to home.

With the body count rising, the package still missing and trouble firmly on their tail, has their luck finally run out? And who will be the last devil to die?

My thoughts:

I have such happy memories reading the first three books with my grandma in our two person book club. She passed away last October so my grandpa gifted me The Last Devil to Die in her memory. I don’t know if I’ll be able to read it any time soon because I’m just not ready to read yet to read the series without her.

However the 4.4 rating on Goodreads is making me think the book is stellar. I’ve enjoyed The Thursday Murder Club, The Man Who Died Twice, and The Bullet Who Missed. My grandparents live in a community very similar to Cooper’s Chase (minus the bodies) and they were always throwing parties and getting up to antics. The series really helps me remember that friendships, hobbies, and purpose don’t need to to diminh as I age.

Goodreads:

From the publication of Agatha Christie’s very first book in 1920 to the release of Sir Kenneth Branagh’s film Death on the Nile , this investigates the phenomenon of Hercule Poirot and celebrates a century of one of the world’s favorite fictional detectives.

Hercule Poirot has had a near-permanent presence in the public eye ever since the 1920 publication of The Mysterious Affair at Styles. The detective who solves diabolical crimes using his “little grey cells” has enamored audiences not only in the original novels, short stories, and plays, but also across radio, television, and movies.

From Agatha Christie’s earliest conceptions and publication history, to forays on the stage and screen, the story of Poirot is as fascinating as it is enduring. Mark Aldridge tells this story decade-by-decade, exploring and analyzing Poirot’s many and often wildly different appearances, following the detective to present day when he is enjoying a worldwide renaissance.

Packed with original research, never-before-published correspondence, and images from the Agatha Christie archives.

My thoughts:

I have been seeing this book all over my twitter timeline and have wanted to buy it so bad. I am so happy to have been gifted it for my birthday, Having perused the book it’s chockfull of cool photographs of first edition book covers and is a really comprensive history of Agatha Christie’s publication history. I am definetly going to buy his upcoming book about Miss Marple coming out later this autumn.

Goodreads:

From the Queen of Suspense, an all-new collection of her spookiest and most sinister stories, including an Agatha Christie story never before published in the USA, The Wife of Kenite!

For lovers of the supernatural and the macabre comes this collection of ghostly and chilling stories from legendary mystery writer Agatha Christie. Fantastic psychic visions, specters looming in the shadows, encounters with deities, a man who switches bodies with a cat—be sure to keep the light on whilst reading these tales.

The Last Séance gathers twenty stories, some featuring Christie’s beloved detectives Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple, in one haunting compendium that explores all things occult and paranormal, and is an essential omnibus for Christie fans.

My thoughts:

My husband bought me The Last Seance in paperback not realizing that I already owned a digital copy, but now were going to be reading the stories together this fall. I’m planning to post reviews of the short stories over the weekends starting this September. Even though I’m not a supernatural, spooky girl, my husband’s favorite holiday is Halloween, and I’m excited to read something with him this spooky season.

Movies & TV

A Haunting in Venice is Kenneth Branagh’s third Poirot movie, with himself playing the titular Poirot. I’m not a huge fan of this series and I wish Branagh had just made Hallowe’en Party Which is one of my absolute favorite Poirot stories instead of this reimaging of the story. In any case, I did see it in theatres twice: once with my husband and once with my sister in law- who kindly gifted me this movie. She’s an even bigger Agatha Christie fan than me so it was great fun going to the movie with her and geeking out together about the movie.

My thoughts:

The Complete Cases of Hercule Poirot is the definitive collection of David Suchet’s potrayal of Hercule Poirot. It’s a great dvd collection and this will be my second one. (I wore out several of the DVD’s)

Puzzle

My thoughts:

I am a huge fan of these Laurence King puzzles and have collected several of them, including the World of Agatha Christie and the World of Hercule Poirot which I have put together, framed, and hung in my office. We have also put together the Dracula and Frankenstein puzzles which are totally office.

Prints

Made by BlackBungalows and comes in either in black or white background.

I love this print made by BlackBungalows and it is such a celebration of Agatha Christie’s nursing background and use of poisons in her books.

Candles

From ClassicBookFans

ClassicBookFans has tones of candles and I was gifted “Tea and Clues” from the variety of Miss Marple and Poirot themed candles. They also have a lot of non-mystery related book candles so if you’re a fan of candles this would be a great small business to support.

Bookmarks

I was also gifted three bookmarks from my dad from Lilja Hazard on Etsy. She has a whole range of mystery book themed book marks. He got me three Agatha Christie themed bookmarks. They also have Jessica Fletcher, Father Brown, and Sherlock themed bookmarks to choose from.

My New bookmarks:

I am so grateful for all of these wonderful bookish gifts for my birthday. Do you have any cool bookish decor that you love?

One response to “Birthday Book(ish) Haul”

  1. That’s an impressive birthday haul – belated best wishes! And I love the jigsaw. I borrowed the World of Agatha Christie one from a friend last Christmas and it was great fun (and also kept me company when I was recovering from COVID…)
