I don’t know who originally made this tag, but when I saw it on Peat Long’s Blog I had to do my own version of The Book Cake Tag.

Flour: A book that was slow to start off, but picked up as it went along.

This is my dad’s favorite book, and I have started (and re-started) many times, but I finally pushed through the slow start and found myself enjoying the book around the halfway mark, and by the end, I had thoroughly enjoyed myself. You can read my review here.

Butter: A book that has a really rich plot.

Ex-con Steven Smith is on the hunt to discover what happened to his old teacher Miss Iles who disappeared after one fateful field trip. Part treasure hunt, part family history, and full of codes and cons, stay sharp and maybe you’ll crack The Twyford Code. Read my review here.

Eggs: A book you thought was going to be bad, but turned out to be quite enjoyable.

I have several librarian friends who read The Perfume of the Lady in Black and they all hated it. I think it’s a much maligned sequel that’s a perfectly enjoyable mystery. My opinion is…divisive. You can read my relatively complimentary review here.

Sugar: A sweet book.

An easy mystery. An enemies-to-lovers B-plot that ends happily ever after. My review is here.

Icing: A book that covers every single thing you enjoy in a book.

A complex female lead, lyrical writing, a strong setting, and a ticking clock are all elements I enjoy. Deadline at Dawn has everything I love in spades. So if you’re looking for a new heart-racing noir thriller, add Deadline at Dawn to your TBR. You can read my review here.

Sprinkles: A book series you turn to when you’re feeling down.

Nostalgia is a powerful mood booster. Whenever I need a break from long, heavy books, I break out my childhood collection of Nancy Drew, and I am transported back to the young girl who was enthralled with reading and wrote her own adventures for Nancy in her notebooks and then read them to her cat. An old favorite is The Secret of the Old Clock. You can read my review here.

Cherry on the Top: Your favorite book this year so far.

I loved the romance, the lush Hawaiian setting, the unforgettable introduction to Charlie Chan, and a dark family history. There’s lots to love in Charlie Chan’s first adventure: The House Without a Key. You can read my review here.

One response to “The Book Cake Tag”

  1. I’ll have to make a note of Deadline At Dawn in particular.

Oddly enough I never find Le Carre books slow at the beginning, but at some point in the middle I feel an urge to mutter a very terse encouragement to get a move on at the author.
