Today, in our eighth book for the #20BooksOfChristmas reading challenge set by That Happy Reader, we will join Hamish Macbeth on his rounds in the pastoral Scottish Highland village of Lochducbh. Macbeth solves crimes and spreads Christmas cheer in this cozy holiday-themed novella by M. C. Beaton.

Story

As Christmas draws near in the enchanting wintry village of Lochducbh, nestled amidst the snow-capped mountains, Hamish Macbeth finds himself in a unique predicament. The strict Calvinist atmosphere has subdued the holiday’s usual cheer, with no lights, trees, or carols in sight—at least not publicly. Yet, the village is not devoid of the festive spirit, as the locals find their own ways to celebrate. Hamish, in the midst of covering for Constable McGregor, who’s out with a bad appendix, is caught in a whirlwind of responsibilities and his own Christmas plans.

Hamish faces a new challenge when festive decorations for a neighboring village are stolen. when Mrs. Gallager, an older woman, reports her cat missing. Though the case seems trivial, Hamish’s keen empathy makes him sense her fear and loneliness, sparking his curiosity about the missing cat and the potential larger mystery about her past.

Meanwhile, a socially isolated schoolgirl named Morag becomes a suspect in one of the cases, prompting Hamish to work his quiet magic. In a twist of fate, he brings two lonely souls together for an unexpected holiday connection.

The story unfolds with charming additions: a romantic spark with a local schoolteacher, a busload of carolers singing their hearts out, and a Christmas dinner that reignites the holiday spirit with its warm, comforting dishes and lively conversations. Still mourning his beloved pet Towser, Hamish finds solace and surprises in this warm and breezy festive tale, featuring the familiar faces and quirky charm of Lochducbh.

Review

A Highland Christmas fulfills its promise of a cozy mystery set in the Scottish Highlands. The story begins with seemingly harmless mysteries: stolen Christmas decorations and a missing cat. However, these seemingly trivial crimes serve as catalysts for significant character growth, bringing several individuals on the outskirts of Lochducbh’s society into the fold. The depth of the story lies in the personal journeys these characters undertake, making it a compelling read for fans of cozy mysteries.

Whether helping an elderly woman put her haunting past to rest, assisting a friendless young girl in finding love, or organizing a Christmas concert at the local community center, Hamish MacBeth is the epitome of community spirit. His actions spread cheer and warmth all over Lochducbh, fostering a sense of inclusivity and togetherness that is truly heartwarming.

Hamish MacBeth is surprisingly community-spirited and looks after his flock with more tenderness than usual. However, M.C. Beaton does manage to sneak in some signature playful snark, and MacBeth outwits his superiors and tells off the village Scrooges with venomous delight. MacBeth is rewarded for his good work with a surprising new companion.

A Highland Christmas is a cozy, festive, feel-good Christmas mystery that I highly recommend.

Rating: 4.5 out of 5.
